Editorial and corrections policy

People use these bills to budget a move, decide whether to challenge a band or price a holiday cottage. A wrong Band D figure or a premium applied in the wrong nation costs them money, so every figure on the site points back to the official file or rule it came from.

The data we use

  • for England, the MHCLG statistical release on council tax levels and its Table 9 and Table 10, which give every billing authority's figure by band and the share of the police, fire, county and Greater London Authority precepts;
  • for Wales, the Welsh Government's council tax levels release, with the county, community council and police elements of each council;
  • for Scotland, the Scottish Government's Council Tax by band table, and the Scottish Water charges printed on every Scottish bill;
  • for the rules, legislation.gov.uk (the Local Government Finance Act 1992 and the regulations made under it), GOV.UK, gov.wales, gov.scot and the Valuation Office Agency.

Sources we refuse

Comparison sites, property report sellers, letting agents and other calculators never provide a figure here, however well they rank. In October 2026 several of them still showed 2025/26 rates or no rate at all for the rules that change a bill most, such as the second homes premium. A council's own page is used only to check a figure against the official table, as we did with the Scottish Water charges.

Testing

Every build runs the engine tests: each English council's eight band charges are compared with Table 9 to the penny, and the Scottish bills, discounts and water charges are checked against a council's published 2026 to 2027 table. A failing test stops the build.

Review cycle

The tables are published each March for the year starting in April. We rebuild the data from the new files as soon as they appear, and re-read the rules on premiums and discounts when the governments change them, as Scotland did on 1 April 2026. Each page shows the date the tables were last read.

Corrections

  1. We open the official file or rule again.
  2. We correct the data script, the parameter file or the engine, and add a test for the case.
  3. The pages rebuild and show the new date.
